Motion Detectors

Motion Detectors
Motion detector is an intelligent device which controls the ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’ operation of electrical loads. When it detects motion inside its detection area, it automatically turns the load ‘ON’. It turns ‘OFF’ the load after preset time delay if no movement is detected for the set time.

A motion detector with in-built photocell continuously measures ambient light and constantly compares it with the preset lux level. Load is switched 'ON' when ambient light falls below a specific threshold while it detects the movement. If it's bright enough, load is automatically switched off even if there are movements inside the detection area.

Hence, it is used for providing artificial light only when it is needed. This reduces the large amount of energy wastage and helps in making the most energy efficient lightings.

Adjustable settings

Detection reach setting
Detection reach is the distance till a motion detector can detect the motion effectively. Detection reach distance can be adjusted electronically to suit particular application. Some of the PIR motion detectors also have facility to tilt and turn their lens window to make them watch over a specific area.
Off delay time setting
Once the motion detector detects any movement, it keeps the load ON for the set off delay time. This off delay time can also be adjusted for all the motion detectors. Depending on the requirement user can set the time from few seconds to couple of minutes.
Twilight setting
A threshold ambient brightness level can be set below which the motion detector starts detecting movement. This setting prevents loads from turning ON during the day time. All the motion detectors have facility to set the threshold from 2 lux (night) to 2000 lux (day).

Technology overview – PIR (Passive Infrared) Motion detection

Passive Infrared motion detector has highly sensitive pyro-sensor operating as the heart of its system. It detects heat radiated from the human body. Segmented lenses divide the whole detection area into passive and active zones. When any warm object like human body moves between the zones, it is detected as a change in voltage by the pyro-sensor. When it detects such movement, it triggers the switching mechanism to operate the connected load.

Practically, the passive infrared motion detector detects movements at right angles (tangential movement) more precisely. With radial movements, reach is usually shortened because detecting a change in temperature in this walking direction is more difficult. While deciding the place for installing the motion detector, this technical parameter must be taken into account. It should be installed in such a way that it is not disturbed or distracted by obstacles or moving objects like fan, curtains, ventilator drafts, etc.

As the pyro-sensor operates by detecting change in the temperature, the ambient temperature plays important role in working of this motion detector. Maximum detection reach distance mentioned for all the PIR motion detectors is measured at the ambient temperature of 25° C. Detection reach distance might change with the change in ambient temperature.

Benefits of PIR motion detector
  • Very effective for applications where detection range needs to be restricted with the help of thin stud wall or glass partitions.
  • As it detects the changes in the heat radiation, it is suitable for outdoor applications.
  • Provides very precise detection of tangential movement.
  • Adjustable day and night operation through in-built photocell.
  • Adjustable off delay timing.
  • Adjustable reach setting (Not available in some models. Please refer the product details for more information).
  • Both the ceiling mount and wall mount models available to suit wide range of applications.

Technology overview - High frequency motion detection

High Frequency (HF) motion detector has a cutting-edge HF-sensor operating as the heart of its system. It is a trans-receiver of high frequency microwave signals. First it emits the signals which are reflected back from the surrounding objects, like wall, furniture or floor. It receives the echo of the reflected signals. Whenever there is any change in the received echo that means the movement is detected inside the detection area and the sensor triggers the switching mechanism. This whole process happens at a lightning speed and hence it provides instant response to the movement and turns 'ON' the load immediately. This detection technique is irrespective of ambient temperature and hence it gives the seamless performance over the various climate conditions.

Practically, working of the high-frequency motion detector is irrelevant to the direction of movement. Hence it provides uninterrupted, reliable coverage over the large detection area. High frequency motion detector is highly sensitive and extremely precise in the way it responds. Near the edge of its detection area, it provides better detection to the tangential movements.

Because of its HF-sensor technology, it can detect motion through doors, glass partitions, thin walls, wooden or stud walls, etc. Hence it can be installed under the false ceiling or inside furniture paneling, giving no hint of its presence from outside.

Benefits of HF motion detector
  • Uninterrupted coverage irrespective of the walking direction over the large detection area.
  • Detection is irrespective of ambient temperature and temperature of objects.
  • Ideal choice for applications where seamless motion detection is required through obstacles like glass door or thin wall.
  • It can be concealed behind the furniture panels or the false ceilings.
  • Extremely short respond time to the detection of movement.
  • Adjustable day and night operation through in-built photocell.
  • Adjustable off delay timing.
  • Adjustable reach setting.
